Dear Angel is an emotionally charged, tactile and interactive artwork that captures how people feel and think about the North East of England. Artist Stevie Ronnie invited participants to handwrite, type, record, make or illustrate a letter home, addressing it to one of the region’s nationally recognised cultural icons: The Angel of the North.

You are welcome to add your own letter to this living record of our region at the gallery, throughout June.

Dear Angel, inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels, bridges the gap between the handwritten letter and digital communications. It explores what the future holds for technology and literature in the wider framework of our evolving digital society.

Alongside Dear Angel, we are delighted to present newly commissioned work by four contemporary, internationally acclaimed artists: Victoria Bradbury, Theresa Easton, Russell Maurice and Tom Schofield; photographer Colin Davison and a UK premiere of work by Indian artist collective, Revue. This exhibition engages us in a deeper conversation with some of the key concepts behind Dear Angel.

Themes include: online and offline communication tools and platforms; contemporary engagement with place; the impact and affect of urban transformation; and the way in which artists are engaging with opportunities for mass global participation through digital technologies.

For further information on all of the artists and their work please visit the Artists section.
